The Choquet boundary has played a central role in the study of complex function algebras, especially uniform algebras. It is essentially a minimal subset on which every function in the algebra achieves its norm. In the early 70's, Arveson discovered an analogue in the context of operator algebras, though he was only able to prove existence in a handful of cases. Motivated by the work of Dritschel and McCullough, he revisited the problem 40 years later, settling the separable case. More recently, Davidson and Kennedy managed to cover all cases. We begin with a summary of the classical theory which motivated Arveson and then highlight some of the ideas that led to the breakthrough. In closing, we mention applications of these ideas, some motivated by engineering problems.<br />
