[Todos] Recordatorio seminario del IFLP - martes 21 de marzo a las 14hs

Estimadas/os,


Les recuerdo que mañana a las 14hs se llevará a cabo el primer
seminario del Ciclo
de Coloquios y Seminarios 2023 del IFLP.

El mismo estará a cargo de la Prof. Eva Santos, del Institute of Physics of
the Czech Academy of Sciences, Praga, República Checa.

Su charla será sobre ¨Solving the puzzle of the seasonal flux variation of
multiple-muon events at the MINOS and NOvA Near Detector ”, y a
continuación enviamos un breve resumen de la misma:

*Muons are the best messengers of the hadronic interactions in extensive
air showers occurring high in the atmosphere, out of reach for arrays of
particle detectors. Of relevance is the flux of high-energy muons measured
by many underground experiments. The explanation for the observed seasonal
variations in the flux of multiple-muon events measured by the MINOS and
NOvA Near Detectors still puzzles researchers. Although Monte Carlo
simulations can reasonably describe the overall muon flux observed in
several experiments, accurately modeling the seasonal variation of
multiple-muon events remains challenging. In a recent study, Gaisser and
Verpoest used CORSIKA simulations to predict the amplitude of multiple-muon
events at the NOvA Near Detector. However, their predicted values were a
factor of four lower than what was observed.Using FLUKA simulations, we
were able, for the first time, to quantitatively describe the seasonal
differences in the fluxes of single and multiple-muon events. Since most of
these events should come from cosmic ray energies with E ~ 1015 eV, we do
not expect significant systematic uncertainties from hadronic interaction
model predictions. We investigate whether inaccuracies in the Monte Carlo
simulations, such as the modeling of the atmosphere, may be responsible for
the observed discrepancies.*
