Subject: Postdoc positions in Swansea - PPTC Group
To: ECT Staff <staff en ectstar.eu>

Dear ECT* Associate,

we would like to bring to your attention the announcement below for 6
postdoctoral positions at the Swansea Particle Physics Theory and
Cosmology research group.

Best regards,
ECT* Staff

Dear Colleagues,

following a recent award of funding from the Science and Technology
Facilities Council (STFC), the Swansea Particle Physics Theory and
Cosmology (PPTC) research group has *six openings for postdoctoral
positions*.

Some of these may be of interest to the ECT* community: three of these
openings will support specific themes of the research programme in
Lattice Field Theory (namely, QCD in extreme conditions, strongly
interacting dynamics beyond the standard model and the interface between
lattice field theory and machine learning), the others being in
QFT/Strings/Black Holes and Holography  (2 posts) and Cosmology Theory
(1 post). The full list of the openings is available at the URL

and applicants are encouraged to submit their paperwork there, but in
order for applications to be official they must also be submitted to
Swansea University following the relevant link at this page:

where full details of the generic duties and other information are also
available.  Only applications submitted through the Swansea system can
be considered.

All posts are for two years, except for the Cosmology one, which is for
3 years. The expectation is that the start will be in the Fall 2023,
although there is some flexibility for the start date. The deadline for
applications will be Dec 11, 2022, at 11:59 PM UK Time.

The PPTC group at Swansea comprises 13 academics and has a strong
research programme in Quantum Field Theories, Strings, Black Holes,
Holography, Cosmology Theory, Amplitudes, QCD spectroscopy and Lattice
Field Theory. The Lattice Field Theory subgroup comprises Gert Aarts,
Chris Allton, Timothy Burns, Biagio Lucini and Maurizio Piai, and has
wide-ranging interests including QCD in extreme conditions, beyond the
standard model and machine learning. The successful candidates will join
a vibrant and stimulating interlinked research environment offering
exciting opportunities for collaborating, developing new ideas and
establishing new connections.

Further details for the lattice posts are as follows:

*Post RA7 - Extreme QCD *

The PDRA will join the research programme undertaken by Gert Aarts,
Chris Allton, and Tim Burns, as part of the FASTSUM collaboration, which
covers QCD at finite temperature and density, with interest in the
behaviour of hadrons below and above the deconfinement transition,
hadron spectroscopy in general, transport, and other observables of
interest for heavy-ion phenomenology. The project will include both
analytical calculations and numerical development. The ideal candidate
for the post will have a strong background in lattice field theory at
either zero or nonzero temperature.

For informal enquiries about this post please contact Gert Aarts
(g.aarts en swansea.ac.uk), Chris Allton (c.r.allton en swansea.ac.uk) or Tim
Burns (t.burns en swansea.ac.uk).

*Post RA8 - Lattice Field Theory and Machine Learning  *

The PDRA will join the research programme led by Gert Aarts and Biagio
Lucini, which covers topics such as machine learning applications to the
study of observables near phase transition points, the inverse
renormalization group, persistent homology methods for identifying
topologically nontrivial field configurations and lattice field theory
derived machine learning methods. The project will include both
analytical calculations and software development. The ideal candidate
for the post will have a strong background in lattice field theory
and/or statistical mechanics with ideally demonstrable experience in
machine learning. Candidates with a background in topological data
analysis or machine learning willing to learn lattice field theory will
also be considered. Given the range of skills considered, candidates are
invited to provide in their application full details about their
previous relevant experience and their expertise.

For informal enquiries about this post please contact Gert Aarts
(g.aarts en swansea.ac.uk) or Biagio Lucini (b.lucini en swansea.ac.uk).

*Post RA4 - Lattice Field Theory applied to extensions of the Standard
Model *

The PDRA will join the research programme led by Biagio Lucini and
Maurizio Piai, working on new strongly coupled realizations of composite
dynamics and its applications, which include for example composite Higgs
models, dilaton-Higgs models, top partial compositeness, quasi-conformal
dynamics, strongly interacting models of dark matter. The ideal
candidate for the post has a strong background in theoretical particle
physics, and previous experience with programming and running lattice
calculations on modern, parallel computing facilities. Familiarity with
current trends in extensions of the Standard Model is desirable, as is
expertise with effective field theory techniques, and with more formal
theoretical ideas, such as those of gauge/gravity dualities. The project
will include both a software development component and a physics
analysis one, hence candidates are invited to provide in their
application technical details about their previous experience.

For informal enquiries about this post please contact Biagio Lucini
(b.lucini en swansea.ac.uk) or Maurizio Piai (m.piai en swansea.ac.uk)

The University is committed to supporting and promoting equality and
diversity in all of its practices and activities. We aim to establish an
inclusive environment and welcome diverse applications from the
following protected characteristics: age, disability, ethnicity, gender
identity, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity,

Best wishes

Gert
