Dear All
We cordially invite you to our Higgs Summer Forum [1] talks, a new
series aimed at providing a stimulating space for intellectual exchange
and scientific debate, including the audience.
23 JUNE, 3PM (BST [2]): MACHINE LEARNING, THE DJINNI IN THE BOTTLE:
PREDICTING WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING?
SPEAKERS: George Biros (Oden Institute, Austin) and Veronica Sanz
(Sussex)
MODERATOR: Luigi Del Debbio (Edinburgh)

Abstract:
In the face of impressive results, random comments about ML range from
"a glorified way of performing a fit" to ethical concerns and
Terminator-style doomsday scenarios. An interesting quote says: "By far,
the greatest danger of Artificial Intelligence is that people conclude
too early that they understand it." On the other hand it appears to hold
the key of possible unlocking previously unknown physics from the deluge
of experimental data being produced. In this debate we will contrast
these two viewpoints critically and aim at a look towards the next
decade of scientific exploration using ML.
16 JULY, 1PM (BST [4]): DETECTION OF NEW PHYSICS FROM THE MUON G-2
EXPERIMENT: MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING?
SPEAKERS: Christoph Lehner (Regensburg, BNL) and Laurent Lellouch (AMU,
CNRS)
MODERATOR: Vera Gülpers (Edinburgh)

Abstract:
Answering questions such as "What is dark matter?" or "What happened
directly after the Big Bang?" requires finding new physics, like not yet
known particles or forces. Via quantum effects such new physics will
contribute tiny amounts to properties of known particles and could be
discovered by observing small deviations between experiments and
theoretical predictions. A promising quantity is the anomalous magnetic
moment of the muon ("Muon g-2"), which describes the behaviour of a muon
inside a magnetic field. A new experimental result released earlier this
year has further increased the discrepancy to the theoretical
prediction, giving rise to a potential discovery of new physics. We will
debate whether there is indeed signs of new physics or if existing
theories do actually cover the latest results.
With kind regards
Ines
