TÍTULO:  WOMEN IN SCIENCE: NUMBERS, CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES

RESUMEN: 
The struggle for greater space in professional life yielded several
results for women. One important example is that women are the majority
of university graduates in many countries of the world. Despite this
great achievement, some careers have remained male strongholds. This is
the case in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics) and especially Physics. In this presentation, I will show
data on the percentage of women in STEM-related careers and the decline
in the share of positions held by women along the years. I will also
bring recent data on the lack of diversity in terms of race and color in
the Brazilian community of physicists. I will discuss causes and
consequences of these data and, as a final note, I will briefly show
some actions that have been implemented to increase diversity in
science.  --
